It represents workers across a variety of fields, including Communications, Electrical, Electronic, Energy, Information, Postal, Plumbing and Allied Services.

CEPU is an almagation of three separate unions, namely the:

Whilst the CEPU is technically one federally registered union, each of the above unions that merged act largely autonomously sharing resources when needed. At a state level many of the unions exist completely separately. The CWU is only registered federally as its main area of coverage is national communications companies like Optus, Telstra and Australia Post.

CEPU is affiliated with the Australian Council of Trade Unions.
