Concordat of Bologna

Encyclopedia : C : CO : CON : Concordat of Bologna

General information

The Concordat of Bologna was an agreement between King Francis I of France and Pope Leo X. It stated that the Pope could collect all the income that the Catholic Church made in France, while the King of France could decide who led the Church (only in France). Details of the agreement include that the Pope could veto any leader the King of France choose that was truly unqualified.

Results of the Concordat

The Concordat of Bologna, which was made in 1516, made the French monarchy very powerful. It allowed the French leaders to take control of the Church as well as the State. For many years to come, the Kings of France would struggle to keep the Catholic Church in power, as it was filled with supporters of their policies. This would lead to persecution under Francis I, Henry II, Francis II, and Charles IX of the non-Catholic portion of the population (mainly focused at the Huguenots).

Many years later, this religious intolerance would lead to civil war and finally religious freedom in the form of an Edict of Toleration (Edict of Saint-Germain) issued by Charles IX's regent.
