Congo most commonly refers to one of two African countries:
- The Republic of the Congo, often known as "Congo-Brazzaville"
- The Democratic Republic of the Congo, sometimes known as "Congo-Kinshasa" or DRC, formerly Zaire
- Belgian Congo, former colony of Belgium in the present-day area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)
- French Congo, former French colony in the present-day area of the Republic of the Congo (ROC)
- Middle Congo, one of the four territories of French Equatorial Africa
- Congo Free State, a kingdom – privately and controversially – owned by King Leopold II of Belgium.
- Kongo Kingdom, the state that was eventually divided by European colonizers, between the Portuguese (Portuguese Congo (presently Cabinda) and Angola), the Belgians (the initial part of the Congo Free State/Belgian Congo), and the French (initial part of French Congo).
