Congressional office buildings

Encyclopedia : C : CO : CON : Congressional office buildings

The largely ceremonial space within the United States Capitol is augmented by office, meeting and service spaces within the Congressional office buildings. There are three Senate office buildings along Constitution Avenue north of the Capitol: The Russell Senate Office Building, the Dirksen Senate Office Building and the Hart Senate Office Building. On the south side of the Capitol, along Independence Avenue are three House office buildings: The Cannon House Office Building, the Longworth House Office Building, and the Rayburn House Office Building. A fourth building, the Ford House Office Building, which used to house the FBI's fingerprint records, sits a few blocks southwest of the others.

The Russell and Cannon buildings were constructed first in the early 1900s, just northeast and southeast, respectively, of the Capitol. The other office buildings were constructed at various times over the next decades, with the Hart building being completed in the 1970s. The additional Senate office buildings were built along Constitution Avenue moving east from the Russell building. The additional House office buildings were built along Independence Avenue moving west from the Cannon building (with the exception of the Ford building, which was not built as a Congressional office building).
