Conspicuous Gallantry Cross

Encyclopedia : C : CO : CON : Conspicuous Gallantry Cross

The Conspicuous Gallantry Cross (CGC) is a British military decoration that was introduced in the 1993 review of the honours structure. It replaced the Distinguished Conduct Medal and the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal, and also replaced the award of the Distinguished Service Order for gallantry, although the latter is still retained as an award for leadership. It serves as the second highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy, immediately below the Victoria Cross, and ranks immediately after the MBE in the Order of Precedence.

The CGC is awarded "in recognition of an act or acts of conspicuous gallantry during active operations against the enemy" performed by all ranks of the British armed services. Corporal Wayne Mills, 1st Battalion, The Duke of Wellington's Regiment, became the first recipient of the CGC in May 1995 for actions in Bosnia on 29 April 1994.

The badge is a silver cross pattée with a St Edward's Crown at the central disc, and two branches of laurel leaves behind the cross. The ribbon is white with a red central stripe and blue edge stripes.

Recipients

Since its introduction in 1993, only fifteen men have so far been awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross (the date is that of the action for which the CGC was awarded). None have yet been awarded posthumously.
