A constrictor knot is a harsh binding knot which is very difficult to undo. It is made similarly to a clove hitch, but with one end passed under the main loop. Its relation to the clove hitch is similar to the anchor bend's relation to the round-turn-and-two-half-hitches.
It might be used for tying the neck of a bag (provided you don't want to re-open it in a hurry, or without cutting the binding).
Tied tightly with small-stuff, it is used temporarily to bind the fibres of a rope or strand end together while splicing or when cutting to length and before whipping an end. An alternative is to use a turn of plastic, adhesive tape for the same purpose.

It's also possible to finish the knot off with an additional overhand knot to give it some of the properties of a square knot.See also
