Convention of Chuenpeh
Encyclopedia : C : CO : CON : Convention of Chuenpeh
Under the (unratified) Convention of Chuenpeh (}; }), China would cede Hong Kong Island to Britain in 1841. China would also pay an indemnity of $6 million and let the British have free access to the port of Canton. This agreement was signed between the Governor of Kwangtung Province, Qishan and Captain Charles Elliot of the Royal Navy. However, both parties were unhappy with this convention and it was not ratified by either party. Later in 1842, Hong Kong Island was formally ceded to Britain under the Treaty of Nanking.
