Copake is a town in Columbia County, United States. New York, USA. The population was 3,278 at the 2000 census. The town derives its name from a lake, which was known to the natives as "Snake Pond." The town borders Taconic State Park.
The Town of Copake is on the eastern border of the county.
History
Settlement began before 1717. It was part of Livingston Manor. The Town of Copake was formed from part of the Town of Taghkanic in 1824, dissolving the former "Town of Granger." A former early industry was iron mining and smelting. Adjacent to the village of Copake Falls in Taconic State Park is the "Ore Pit", a former iron mine, now a 40 foot deep swimming pond.Former residents of note

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 109.1 km² (42.1 mi²). 106.1 km² (41.0 mi²) of it is land and 3.0 km² (1.2 mi²) of it (2.75%) is water.The east town line is the border of Berkshire County, Massachusetts.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 3,278 people, 1,280 households, and 869 families residing in the town. The population density was 30.9/km² (80.0/mi²). There were 2,185 housing units at an average density of 20.6/km² (53.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.55% White, 0.70% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.58% from other races, and 1.59% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.29% of the population.There were 1,280 households out of which 27.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.1% were non-families. 25.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.89.
In the town the population was spread out with 21.4% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 104.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.5 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $42,261, and the median income for a family was $46,544. Males had a median income of $32,004 versus $25,341 for females. The per capita income for the town was $23,088. About 6.5% of families and 8.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.8% of those under age 18 and 4.5% of those age 65 or over.

- Copake (formerly "Copake Flats") -- The hamlet of Copake is in the south part of the town.
- Copake Falls -- A hamlet north of Copake village.
- Copake Iron Works -- A former community in the town, now in the state park.
- Copake Lake -- A lake on the western town line.
- Craryville (formerly "Bains Corner") -- A hamlet in the northwest part of the town.( * note to owners of this page: Craryville is a separate town then Copake. Craryville is located about 5 min. away)
- Taconic Shores -- A community northwest of Copake village, primarily south of Robinson Pond.

- Weedmines -- A location at the south town line.
- West Copake (formerly "Andersons Corners") -- A hamlet in the southwest part of the town and southwest of Copake village.
