Cosby was an
American situation comedy television series broadcast on
CBS Television from
1996 to
2000. The eponymous star of the series was
Bill Cosby, who played grumpy Hilton Lucas, a man forced into early (and unwanted) retirement. His wife, Ruth, was played by
Phylicia Rashad, who had also starred as Cosby's wife in the epochal
1980s sitcom,
The Cosby Show. (Initially,
Telma Hopkins was cast as Ruth Lucas; however, due to lack of
chemistry between her and Cosby, the producers got Rashad instead.) The couple had one daughter, Erica Lucas, portrayed by
T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh. Also appearing on the series were
Madeline Kahn, who played neighbor Pauline Fox from 1996 until her death in
1999, and
Doug E. Doug, who played Griffin Vesey, a friend of the Lucas family who tried occasionally to win Erica's affections.
The show itself was based on the concept from the BBC series One Foot in the Grave, starring Richard Wilson. David Renwick was listed as executive producer on both shows.
