In superhero comic books, cosmic beings are fictional characters possessing superpowers on a planetary, stellar, galactic or even universal level, far beyond those of humans or superheroes, and usually serving some natural function in the fictional universes they exist in.

One of the particularities of the Marvel Universe is that it contains beings that are literally part of the universe, so that their existence is necessary to provide a certain function for the universe. Much like organs provide specific functions for the human body, these different entities provide functions for the universe itself. There is no official (known) name for these beings, but they are often referred as cosmic entities or cosmic beings. Each of them embodies some concept or fulfills some essential need.

Each cosmic being is unique, but they often have the following characteristics in common:

It must be noted that there are many beings that are often confused with cosmic beings, but are not. In particular, the gods of Earth are not truly cosmic. Some other beings (such as the Heralds of Galactus) can use the Power Cosmic, but their existence is not necessary for the universe to exist. Others pretend to embody existential concepts, but lack the power of the true entities (e.g. the demon D’spayre claims to embody despair). Exactly how many true cosmic entities exist is unknown, and more keep being discovered as time passes.

Cosmic beings appear to have a loose organization, where each acts by itself, or in a small group; some are actively opposed to another being. However, they are all bound by a common set of rules, as imposed by the Living Tribunal (see below).

These beings include:

DC Universe

In DC Comics cosmic beings are cosmic entities and are characterized as more godlike. They do not interfere as much in reality as they do in the Marvel Universe and they are divided into the spiritual, spacial and the magical realms. They also change in power and were rare in the Golden Age of comics where superheroes in the future and past were vastly more powerful ("planet-moving" superheroes were more superior to man, and depicted as gods). The magical realm usually consists of beings from other dimensions and the spiritual realm consists of ghostly beings, legends and deities usually of the past. There are also stronger Heaven and Hell related beings from the realistic side of the DC Universe, also the Vertigo series, which have god-like or demi-god-like powers and are directly connected with Greek Mythology. Wonder-Woman also follows a similar character base. In Books of Magic it is particularly noted that the cosmic entities like Phantom Stranger and Spectre both appear from the DC Universe and the Vertigo Universe. The spacial realm consists of highly advanced alien races and entities of extreme power who evolved within the cosmos. Because the DC Universe is more centralized, supernatural beings usually take any shape size or form on Earth. Other entities can be considered as powerful and similar to Marvel cosmic beings such as Kismet, Imperiex and beings from Jack Kirby's Fourth World series.
