Coventry Airport is a small airport close toBaginton about 5 km south of Coventry, England. The airport is actually in Warwickshire just outside the city boundaries. Coventry airport is a main hub for Thomsonfly, the scheduled service provider of Thomson Holidays who also own Britannia Airways. The airport is owned by the CAFCO-C, and is currently obtaining planning permission to build a permanent terminal, and passenger facilities.
History
Coventry Airport was opened in 1936, and was the base of Armstrong Whitworth, aircraft manufacturers. During World War II, it was utilised by the Royal Air Force, and was damaged in the Luftwaffe bombing of Coventry in 1940.
After the war, the airport came into the ownership of Coventry City Council, and was mainly used for freight and limited charter flights. In 2003 the airport applied to Warwick District Council, for planning permission for a new terminal which was rejected. Currently temporary passenger facilities are provided. The airport's expansion has been opposed by local groups and the National Air Transport Plan in favour of nearby, better equipped and more established, Birmingham International Airport. British charter airline Air Atlantique is based at Coventry Airport.
