Creep (Starcraft)

Encyclopedia : C : CR : CRE : Creep (Starcraft)

In the computer game StarCraft, creep is an organic ground cover necessary for constructing 'structures' by the Zerg race. It is automatically created by Hatcheries and Creep Colonies.

Biology

Creep is a lower form of Zerg, similar to blood vessels in a way. When a hatchery or creep colony is built, it causes creep to cover a circular area around it. This creep provides nourishment to the Zergs, this is comparable to capillaries in that it fuels Zerg structures. Most Zerg units have an individual metabolism and thus do not require creep to survive, however Zerg larva are dependent on it and will quickly die if they are cut off from it. Additionally, Zerg "buildings" are unable to eat or move, and so require the creep to survive as well, however if cut off they will retain a miniscule patch under them and remain functional. The Zerg extractor, however, can be built without creep, making it unique.

Tactical Effects

Creep serves to slow Zerg expansionism in games. No buildings can be built without being on creep except for the Hatchery, which takes an extremely long time to build, and the extractor, which does not spread creep. This results in a handicap for Zerg players (and Protoss as well who cannot built without pylons), who otherwise would be able to expand very quickly and easily annihalate enemies, especially the Terrans, whose main advantage is their ability to build and the ability of many of their buildings to fly. It can also be used to protect a base from rushers who would build cannons in a base early in the game.
