Crossville is a city in Cumberland County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 8,981 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Cumberland County[Geographic references#6GR6].

Crossville is located at [35°57′15″N, 85°1′53″W] (35.954221, -85.031267)[Geographic references#1GR1]. It's elevation at known point WO4U-10 (AR333) is 576 meters (1890 feet) -- validated against 577 meters (1894 feet) from NED Contiguous U. S. 1/3E arc second elevation data. Crossville is approximately 30 miles east of Cookeville and 70 miles west of Knoxville. It is located on the Cumberland Plateau.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 39.1 km² (15.1 mi²). 38.2 km² (14.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it (2.32%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 8,981 people, 3,795 households, and 2,440 families residing in the city. The population density was 235.2/km² (609.2/mi²). There were 4,268 housing units at an average density of 111.8/km² (289.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.02% White, 0.14% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.04% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.43% of the population.

There were 3,795 households out of which 27.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.2% were married couples living together, 15.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 31.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.79.

In the city the population was spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 19.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 85.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $25,796, and the median income for a family was $33,207. Males had a median income of $26,735 versus $20,217 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,066. About 21.7% of families and 24.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 36.2% of those under age 18 and 20.6% of those age 65 or over.
