She enlisted in the summer of 1997 for two years with six additional years in the reserves, but was discharged prior to completing her obligation.
Criminal record
A North Carolina paper reported that in June of 2002 she stole the automobile of a man to whom she was giving a lap dance at a Durham strip club. The report says she led a sheriff’s deputy on a winding car chase at speeds of up to 70 mph (113 km/h), and tried to run him down as he approached the vehicle on foot.
As of early 2006, Mangum was majoring in Police Psychology at NCCU and had maintained a 3.0 GPA.
Duke scandal
Mangum made her accusations in March 2006. On April 16, Jesse Jackson promised to pay for the rest of her tuition regardless of the outcome of this case.
Name revelation
On April 21, 2006, the talk show host Tom Leykis researched and revealed her name on his radio broadcast. In matters of sexual assault and rape, Leykis is well-known for his insistance that an accuser be publicly named if the general public is privy to the name of the accused.
