Cultural liberalism is a form of liberalism which stresses the freedom of the individual from what Lord Acton called the tyrany of the majority, the right of the non-conformist to march to a different drummer. The culture wars in modern American politics are usually drawn between cultural liberals and cultural conservatives. Cultural liberals believe in the freedom of the individual to worship or not worship in their own way, to read and write without government oversight or fear of censorship, to structure their family in whatever way seems best to them, to consult with their physician in private and without government interference, to enjoy a legal system that shows no partiality on the basis of race or religion, to celebrate a variety of life styles and languages, and to raise their children according to their own beliefs.
