From the Cummins Inc. website ([link]): Cummins Inc., a global power leader, is a corporation of complementary business units that design, manufacture, distribute and service engines and related technologies, including fuel systems, controls, air handling, filtration, emission solutions and electrical power generation systems. Headquartered in Columbus, Indiana, (USA) Cummins serves customers in more than 160 countries and territories through its network of 550 Company-owned and independent distributor locations and more than 5,000 dealer locations. With more than 33,000 employees worldwide in February 2006, Cummins is growing. Sales in 2004 were $8.4 billion, and slightly greater than $9.9 billion in 2005. Net income for 2005 was $550 million.
Today more than 51% of Cummins' business comes from operations outside of the United States. Part of Cummins model is to create partnerships with key players in foreign markets and they have done so recently in China and India.
Cummins is named after inventor-mechanic Clessie Cummins, who was one of the key players in the founding of the company. He was financially backed by investor William Irwin, starting in 1919, as he improved on existing diesel engine designs.
