In August 1992, the area was slammed by Hurricane Andrew. In August 2005, the area was hit with serious floods from Hurricane Katrina, which by radar estimates dropped over 20 inches or 500mm of rainfall.
On January 11 2005, residents on this unincorporated community voted to incorporate, making it the youngest incorporated place in Florida. In November of 2005, the area was incorporated as "Cutler Bay". In part named after the former town of "Cutler" which existed at the turn of the century but was disincorporated during the depression.
In January 2006, Cutler Bay elected former Florida state legislator John F. Cosgrove as its first mayor.
Geography
Cutler Bay is located at (25.582684, -80.346799).[Geographic references#1GR1]According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP had a total area of 12.6 km² (4.9 mi²). 12.3 km² (4.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (2.26%) is water.
Demographics
As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 24,781 people, 8,396 households, and 6,322 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,014.3/km² (5,213.4/mi²). There were 8,725 housing units at an average density of 709.2/km² (1,835.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 73.72% White, 15.68% African American, 0.27% Native American, 1.73% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 4.78% from other races, and 3.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 36.75% of the population.There were 8,396 households out of which 40.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.6% were married couples living together, 16.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.7% were non-families. 19.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.91 and the average family size was 3.35.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 31.6% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 92.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.9 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,917, and the median income for a family was $50,956. Males had a median income of $34,940 versus $27,565 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $18,559. About 9.2% of families and 11.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.3% of those under age 18 and 18.0% of those age 65 or over.
