Cyberbrain

Encyclopedia : C : CY : CYB : Cyberbrain

The term Cyberbrain was coined by the anime and manga series Ghost in the Shell and refers to a brain into which terminals have been physically implanted. The implants in conjunction with micromachines allows the brain to initiate and maintain a connection to computer networks or other Cyberbrains. This makes a direct, constant connection between the human brain and the internet possible without the need for external devices.

The anime and manga series Ghost in the Shell, focuses on Cyberbrain neural augmentation technology, which involves the implantation of powerful computers directly into the brain, giving a person a vastly increased memory capacity, total recall, as well as the ability to view his or her own memories on an external viewing device. Users can also initiate a "telepathic" conversation with one or more Cyberbrain users, just by thinking it.

Drawbacks include possible hacking and alteration of one's memories or sensory input, as was witnessed in the Laughing Man incident, where the visual sensory input of an entire crowd was altered so that the perpetrator could escape from the police. Also rarely, a user may begin to suffer from Cyberbrain Sclerosis, which is a terminal illness that results in the hardening of the nervous tissues caused by the presence of the cybernetic implants. Another drawback is Closed Shell Syndrome (Cyberbrain induced autism), where users who are too compatible with Cyberbrain technology eventually shut themselves off from the outside world to avoid harming others or themselves by forcibly accessing their cyberbrains.

Cyberbrain Sclerosis

Cyberbrain sclerosis is a fictional disease introduced in [[Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex]]. Cyberbrain sclerosis involves hardening of the brain tissues caused by the brain cyberization process. As no cure exists, Cyberbrain sclerosis is always fatal. Although the odds of symptoms manifesting are exceedingly low, anyone that has a cyberbrain is potentially at risk.

A major part of the plot in GitS:SAC is the suppression of the Murai vaccine in favor of Micromachine treatment, which is ineffective at treating Cyberbrain sclerosis. Later, it is revealed that Hisashi Imakurusu, the man who personally denied approval for the vaccine was himself in the final stages of the disease, and was being kept alive using the vaccine he worked to keep from the public. Imakurusu had dedicated his life to finding a cure for Cyberbrain Sclerosis, only to have Murai usurp him unexpectedly.
