Cypress Semiconductor began operations in 1982 and listed publicly in 1986. Two years later, the company shifted over to the NYSE under the symbol, (NYSE:CY). Its headquarters are in San Jose, California, and it has divisions in the United States, India and the Philippines. As of 2003, it has 4,000 employees and sales of 836.8 million US dollars.

Some its main competitors include Integrated Device Technology, Samsung Electronics, and Xilinx.

To combat falling commodity chip prices, since 1999 it has been buying smaller, specialized technology companies in recent years, including IC Works, a maker of timing chips, Anchor Chips, a maker of USB chips, Galvantech, Inc., and Cascade Semiconductor Corporation, a company specializing in one-transistor Pseudo-SRAM products for wireless applications.

It was founded and led by T.J. Rodgers, who received his bachelor's degrees from Dartmouth College and his Ph.D. from Stanford University. Cypress has manufacturing plants and design facilities at the following locations: USA, Philippines, Belgium, India, and Ireland.
