Doom, from Old English dōm, Proto Germanic domaz, means "judgement", "law" (compare Sanskrit dhaman "law"), see also Domsday Book. Similar to law, the word's etymology is something that is set or fixed, viz. by a lawmaker or ruler. By extension to divine law or judgement, doom refers to a negative but inevitable fate, understood as a punishment from God.
