Encyclopedia : D : DA : DAR : D. A. Ratcliffe

Dr. D. A. Ratcliffe was a bird lover who joined the Nature Conservancy Council as Chief Scientist and published various works on nature and conservation. [link]

One of his most often cited works is a study on egg shell breakage conducted in the 1940s. Some, including Rachel Carson in her book Silent Spring, have interpreted the study as establishing a causal link between DDT contamination and "thinning of egg shells in raptors."
