Dabbs Greer

Encyclopedia : D : DA : DAB : Dabbs Greer

Williams "Dabbs" Greer (born April 2, 1917 in Fairview, Missouri) is an American character actor who has performed many diverse supporting roles in film and television for at least 50 years.

His soft-spoken, slightly Southern voice fits well in shows featuring rustic characters, such as Westerns.

He is instantly recognizable to fans of The Adventures of Superman, as he appeared in three separate roles on that show, including the series' first episode, "Superman on Earth" (1952). He was also the major guest star in "Five Minutes to Doom" (1954) and "The Superman Silver Mine" (1958).

He also had a prominent role in Little House on the Prairie as Reverend Alden.

He played the elderly version of Tom Hanks' Paul Edgecomb in the 1999 movie The Green Mile. His character in that film, unlike his second Superman role, put him on the management side of the electric chair.
