Daco-Romanian (Romanian: limba dacoromânǎ, Latin: lingua Daco-Romana) is the term used to identify the Romanian language in contexts where distinction needs to be made between the various Eastern Romance languages or dialects (Daco-Romanian, Aromanian, Istro-Romanian, and Megleno-Romanian). Certain sources classify these four languages as dialects of a larger Romanian languageEncyclopaedia Britannica article on "Romanian" http://www.britannica.com/eb/article-9083828, hence the need for this distinction. It is spoken by 26-30 millions people.

The origin of the term "Daco-Romanian" can be traced back to the first printed book of Romanian grammar Samuil Micu, Gheorghe Şincai, Elementa linguae daco-romanae sive valachicae, Vienna, 1780., written by Samuil Micu and Gheorghe Şincai. There, the Romanian dialect spoken north of the Danube is called lingua Daco-Romana to emphasize its origin and its area of use, which includes the former Roman province of Dacia.
