The initial idea for Dan's Bake Sale was conceived on the Rush Limbaugh talk show more than five years ago. One caller, "Dan" from Colorado, asked Rush Limbaugh for a subscription to the Limbaugh Letter, Rush's monthly magazine that covered current events. Rush suggested Dan organize a bake sale as a spoof of recent bake sales to raise funds to reduce the national debt. The idea took off with Rush's promotion of the event on his talk show (particularly when Rush said he'd attend); when the event was finally over, over 80,000 people had visited Fort Collins for Dan's Bake Sale.
Dan himself, according to a coworker at the time, became totally disenchanted with Rush Limbaugh from the way he was ignored and mistreated at the event.
