Dancing on Ice is a British reality television show, in which celebrities and their professional partners dance on ice in front of a panel of judges. It first aired on ITV1, in January 2006 and has a similar format to that of the BBC show Strictly Come Dancing. Coincidentally, the US equivalent Dancing with the Stars, inspired a similar show, Skating with Celebrities.
Each week one couple was eliminated from the competition, until a winner was chosen from the final three contestants. Britain's best-known ice-skating duo Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean helped train the aspiring dancers. The show was a ratings success for ITV with 10 million viewers in its first week of broadcast.
It was presented by Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, and the supplementary ITV2 programme, Dancing on Ice Defrosted, was presented by Stephen Mulhern. Half way through the series a weekday ITV1 show was introduced called Dancing on Ice Extra; this was presented by eliminated contestants Andi Peters and Andrea McLean.
The first series ended on Saturday 4 March 2006. A second series is scheduled for January 2007.
