Dr. Daniel Pauly is a Professor and Director of the Fisheries Centre at the University of British Columbia and Project Leader of the Sea Around Us Project. Some of his primary work involves documenting the effects of overfishing. He authored a book entitled In a Perfect Ocean. For working to protect the environment, he earned a place in the 2003 Scientific American 50 and the 2005 International Cosmos Prize.
Early in his career, Pauly developed new methods for estimating fish populations. Later, he helped to develop FishBase. To date, he frequently expresses opinions about public policy. Specifically, he argues that governments should abolish subsidies to fishing fleets and establish marine reserves.
