Darrell Grant

Darrell Grant is a jazz pianist born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on May 30, 1962. He grew up in Lakewood, Colorado and was a member, during his teen years, of a local dixieland band called "The Pearl Street Jazz Band". In high school (Lakewood High School) he played tennis and excelled in public speaking under the tutelage of well-known speech coach Richard Orland "RJ" Johnson. He studied classical and jazz piano before receiving a scholarship, at age 17, to the Eastman School of Music. He went on to earn a master's degree from the renowned University of Miami. He had a band called "Current Events" in the 1980s and successes working with Betty Carter, Woody Shaw, Leslie Gore, Frank Morgan, Greg Osby, Roy Haynes and Brian Blade. He currently lives in Portland, Oregon, is a professor of music at Portland State University and could probably be elected mayor if he was interested. His website is http://darrellgrant.com/.
