Darren James (born Darren Keith Edwards on February 25, 1964 in Detroit, Michigan) is a former African-American pornographic actor who sent shock waves throughout the adult entertainment industry and made worldwide headlines after being diagnosed with the HIV virus.
The six-year veteran performer tested positive on April 13, 2004 after having unprotected anal sex with Brazilian porn star Bianca Biaggi during the shooting of the video "Split That Booty 2". By the end of the month, it was discovered that James had transmitted the virus to three actresses: Lara Roxx, Miss Arroyo and Jessica Dee.
Unfounded rumors began and persist that a transvestite - and not Biaggi - gave James the virus. This has been strenuously denied by both James and those close to him.
The ensuing fears of HIV infection (as well as the public scandal and criticisms of the industry that followed the outbreak) caused a two-month shutdown of production of adult movies in Los Angeles, and though not officially barred from continuing to perform sex in front of the cameras, James has since turned to directing. He lives in Canoga Park, part of the San Fernando Valley, California.
Trivia
Though a veteran of over 250 titles, he remained relatively unknown throughout his career as a performer until the outbreak.
Is the first heterosexual male performer to test positive for HIV since Tony Montana in 1999.
A health and fitness fanatic, he would take an AIDS test at the Adult Industry Medical Care Foundation clinic every week or two rather than go in for the monthly checkup that is normally required by most major adult film studios for continual employment in adult films.
Stunned by the results of his HIV test, he immediately went into hiding for a week in an attempt to evade the news media, leaving friends and colleagues deeply concerned for his well-being and thus bringing more unwanted attention to himself.
