General concept: Any User Interface that is intended to communicate status to the user.
A digital dashboard, a genus of software products for business: a way of monitoring the health of business attributes, functions or systems through a visual representation. At-a-glance understanding is often provided through use of a red/yellow/green light metaphor, charts, and alert icons. Also known as an "enterprise dashboard", "executive dashboard", or "business dashboard"

The concept that your view of the environment is 'above' the dashboard is the most defining aspect of a dashboard. Other blends of indicators and view are more similar to Head-Up Displays and Immersive digital environments. See Dashboard construct.
