Dave Holmes (born March 14, 1971 in St. Louis, Missouri) was the runner-up on MTV's first Wanna Be a VJ contest in 1998. From the beginning, he distinguished himself from other candiates with an encyclopedic knowledge of music trivia. Though he lost to Jesse Camp, MTV still hired him to conduct celebrity interviews. He then went on to host several other MTV shows, including 120 Minutes, a Real World reunion special, Court TV's Saturday Night Solution, and the popular Say What? Karaoke until 2001. Ironically, his MTV career lasted about two years longer than Jesse's. He has also appeared on VH1's Best Week Ever and has a recurring role on the Comedy Central series Reno 911!.
In 2005 he hosted the CBS summer series Fire Me...Please.
Holmes is the only openly gay MTV VJ, and one of the only openly gay reality TV hosts.
Born and raised in St. Louis, Holmes' family still lives there-- his parents Charles and Mary Lou and two older brothers, Dan and Steve, who work in the family's financial-consulting business in Clayton, Missouri, a St. Louis suburb. After high school, Holmes attended the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts, where he worked at the campus radio station.
Holmes currently resides in Los Angeles.
