Who is David DeAngelo?
Encyclopedia : D : DA : DAV : David DeAngelo
Background
David DeAngelo is a "dating advice expert" based in the United States. He has applied various schools of thought, psychological theories and his own experiences and opinions in his "Double Your Dating" products. Originally a student of Ross Jeffries and using the nickname Sisonpyh, DeAngelo's ideas were first widely published and publicized in the underground seduction newsletter called [Cliff's List].[Cliff's List]DeAngelo's commercial career began with the release of his first book "Double Your Dating" in 2001. Since then, he has released many products aimed at helping men become successful with women and dating.
Beliefs
DeAngelo argues that much of human social behavior is related in some way to sexual reproduction, and that human mating habits are essentially primal and do not differ significantly from other species.
In his "Mastery with Women and Dating" videos, DeAngelo states that in order to be successful with women today, men should understand the biological instincts and motivations of their predecessors; enabling them to copulate and survive. He believes that societal conditioning has programmed many modern men to lose sight of the basic principles behind dating. Once decoded and understood, men can become more natural and confident in their social interactions.
These concepts are detailed through recorded seminars and related media. The seminars claim success in teaching men to attract women and become more successful in other aspects of their lives.
Attraction
According to DeAngelo attraction mostly operates on a subconcious level. While some believe that good looks are what primarily attracts women to men, DeAngelo disagrees, arguing that physical features have very little to do with attraction. One of DeAngelo's favorite lines is: "Attraction isn't a choice."Most men are unfamiliar with what causes attraction, says DeAngelo, so women dictate when and where relationships are formed. Attempting to appeal to women using reason will be unsuccessful, since attraction is unconscious. DeAngelo implores men to become successful by taking charge and shifting the balance of power from women to themselves.
DeAngelo often uses terms in his material to describe both "incorrect" and "desired" male behavior. Some of these include:
- The Inner Wuss: a character trait of men developed through time that causes them to become submissive around women in order for them to get the women's approval. DeAngelo claims that women prefer men who will stand up to them ['The ultimate mistake men make with women'] (see also: Nice guy syndrome).
- Status: a perception of a person's importance or standing in society. DeAngelo believes that a man's status is signalled by his actions, and that men should learn to communicate higher status as a means of attracting women. He claims that communicating higher status to a woman creates attraction.['Why We Strive For Status']
- Cocky and funny: describes a technique that involves making socially inappropriate, humourously arrogant comments during a conversation. Also known as "Cocky Comedy" in his video series.['How To Be Cocky And Funny']
- Counterintuitive behavior: DeAngelo's description of some of his techniques to attract women, as they are the opposite of what most people think is attractive. Examples of such behavior include teasing a woman offhandedly and refusing to compliment her appearance.
- Life changes: DeAngelo reiterates that the purpose of his programs is to effect a complete personality and lifestyle change among men that will help them achieve romantic success. He, and many of his followers, state that they disapprove of men who utilize his teachings for physical pleasure only.http://www.askmen.com/dating/dating_advice_150/175_dating_tips_a.html
- Emulate the Successful: DeAngelo encourages the following and emulation of those successful with women. He records interviews with those very successful in dating and releases them monthly as part of a subscription service.
- Sexual Communication: DeAngelo's principle of a 'secret mating language' or 'secret mating dance' that takes place between a man and a woman before they can mate.
The \"Protection Shield\"
DeAngelo attributes the necessity for his techniques to a phenomenon he calls the "protection shield." According to him, so many men express interest in many physically attractive women that the woman quickly becomes bored with talking with them all. The most common way women react to approaches is by acting "cold" and indifferent. He states that such shields become "time management" devices. For this reason DeAngelo stresses the importance of NOT doing what everyone else does attempting attract women - one reason why cocky and funny is attributed its value.Double Your Dating
Double Your Dating is a series of tutorials primarily advertised and sold through the internet. The foundation for the Double Your Dating series is an eponymous ebook to help men "demystify" much of what goes into attraction. Following the ebook, DeAngelo created further materials in the series, including a second ebook, as well as several ebooklets, seminars on DVDs and CDs covering various topics (notably the Advanced and Mastery series), and the monthly Interviews with Dating Gurus CDs.
Support
DeAngelo runs a newsletter, which goes out to over 1 million subscribers across the world Strauss, N. (2005) The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists. New York, NY: HarperCollins.. He is among the top 3 most sought after gurus in what is known as the "Seduction Community", along with Mystery and Ross Jeffries. The success stories sent in by readers often rate David DeAngelo's material very highly, giving stories of their sexual lives being entirely turned around. He is the first guru to ever include guest teachers from other programs into his seminars. He is also the first to introduce a monthly interview series that consists of a 1 to 2 hour interview with the world's best at seduction. While some claim that his material is only used by men to manipulate women into having sex, DeAngelo states in one of his advanced dating technique seminars that people can use the techniques to achieve a variety of goals, whether the goal is to have casual sex or to form more lasting relationships. David DeAngelo, as part of the Seduction Community as a whole, often comes under fire by women and men who advocate "just being yourself"['Games Are For Children'], but is just as strongly defended by his proponents who argue that these opinions are based on ignorance of his actual material. ['Does Double Your Dating by David Deangelo help you succeed with women?']
Many women who are published in his newsletter, and others who have appeared on his interviews and seminars, strongly approve of his material. Some of his students include Tyler Durden (co-founder of Real Social Dynamics), and Neil Strauss (New York Times bestselling author).
Criticism
There is controversy in the Seduction Community regarding Deangelo's "Cocky & Funny" technique, and whether or not it has been over-emphasized. ['The Cocky Funny Thing And David DeAngelo']http://www.fastseduction.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?action=retrieve&grp=6&mn=1088586276160774 This technique is the one for which DeAngelo is best known. Critics believe the technique may backfire and can be easily interpreted as arrogant, insecure and phony. This actually harms a man's chances with women. Other organizations [Dutch Seduction] have developed alternative methods such as "P&C" ("playful and confident") that they consider to be superior to DeAngelo's "cocky & funny" techniques, although most people in the community see very little difference between the two techniques. In reaction to this criticism, DeAngelo stated in his Mastery program (CD 12-01) that he sometimes wished he had never said the words 'cocky & funny' because people often latch onto the technique and then try to use it in every situation imaginable. Further, he said that in order to master the art of women and dating, the greatest part of the effort should be put into honing identity, perceived reality, beliefs, and values and the least focus be given to the mastery of techniques.
In 2005, DeAngelo released a CD/DVD program called "Cocky Comedy", a program designed to focus on and teach the "Cocky & Funny" technique in detail. In this program, DeAngelo breaks down and teaches the concept of humor and what triggers laughter. He illustrates that humor is the one thing that brings people closer faster and more efficiently than almost all other forms of communication. DeAngelo also illustrates that laughter isn't usually triggered by something that is funny. According to DeAngelo, this series was created and released in response to the confusion and difficulty that some of his students were having with learning "Cocky & Funny". Since the release of "Cocky Comedy", the criticism that "Cocky & Funny" has brought has been reduced.
Controversy about Catch Him and Keep Him
In 2005 there was much controversy in the online PUA community about Christian Carter's identity and whether Christian Carter is another pen name for David DeAngelo, given that the site is registered, and possesses a similar site design, to Double Your Dating and that the writing style of Catch Him And Keep Him is very much like that of David DeAngelo's. This controversy erupted on Thundercat's 'Seduction Lair' blog, a blog popular in the PUA community (visited by such figures as Style, Mystery, Papa, Tyler Durden, Gunwitch, and Ross Jeffries). In July 2005 a conflict ensued between a person claiming to be the real Christian Carter and Ross Jeffries, under the nickname "Mine '99". Jeffries claimed that David DeAngelo is Christian Carter. [link]
Jeffries wrote: "In the final analysis, if you wrote the book at Pagan's request or he is involved in the marketing of it, it is still a betrayal of his DYD customer list. He's still promoting and marketing a product that tells women to avoid the men who do the stuff he teaches in the DYD ebook." This is not true, as it is clear from the newsletters that Catch Him and Keep Him sends out that it teaches much of the same things Double Your Dating teaches to men, such as not revealing "feelings" after only a few dates, being too clingy, and trying to force the other person to like you.
The "Natural and Lasting Attraction" program gives a free sample video which shows Christian Carter lecturing to a live female audience [link]. Additionally, Christian Carter is featured as a guest speaker in David DeAngelo's Advanced Dating Techniques program. A preview video of him speaking at the seminar is available [here].
It appears that Christian Carter works for David DeAngelo's company. Questions still remain about the level of David DeAngelo's involvement in Catch Him and Keep Him's website and products. It may be that David DeAngelo hired another person to host the seminars, but that behind the scenes he wrote the script to everything he would say. The newsletters that Christian Carter sends say much of the same things that David DeAngelo gives in his Double Your Dating newsletters. Also, they are written in the same style, with very short (and sometimes one line) paragraphs, and occassionally capitalizing every letter in a word to emphasize important points. Both the Catch Him and Keep Him and Double Your Dating newsletters give the same address for their offices: 3960 Howard Hughes Pkwy, 5th Floor, Las Vegas, NV 89109
