David Haye (Born 13 October 1980) is an English boxer who fights in the Cruiserweight division.
Based in Bermondsey, England, Haye started out as an amateur winning a silver medal in the heavyweight division at the World Amateur Championships. He is known for his punching power, dispatching his first 5 opponents in 10 rounds.
He turned professional in 2002 with a Technical Knockout of Tony Booth in the 2nd round of his debut and went on to capture the English Cruiserweight title against Tony Dowling. In his 10th fight he defeated former IBF Cruiserweight champion 'King' Arthur Williams with a Technical Knockout in the 3rd round.
In his next fight Haye fought for the IBO Cruiserweight title but lost against champion Carl 'The Cat' Thompson. Unable to knock him out, Haye quickly punched himself out and was forced to throw in the towel. After that loss an extensive rebuilding process is going on which has so far featured Haye knock out 5 opponents in only 9 rounds.
On December 16th 2005, he defeated Alexander Gurov, a 34 year old Ukrainian that holds number 2 slot in the WBC rankings, to become European Cruiserweight Champion. The fight lasted 45 seconds when Haye landed a stunning punch securing his future in international boxing.
He retained his title against Lasse Johansen on the 24th of March 2006, who he beat once before in his amateur days. The fight proved the longest in his professional career to date lasting 8 rounds, demonstrating that the "Hayemaker" has the stamina, as well as the obvious punching power, to defeat his opponents.
In January 2006, the Hayemaker signed a three year contract with former Lennox Lewis promoter Frank Maloney. Now Haye is set on a rematch fight with Carl Thompson and hopes at challenging for the World Cruiserweight Championship.
