Encyclopedia : D : DA : DAV : David J. Hanson

David Justin Hanson, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the State University of New York at Potsdam, N.Y., U.S.A.. Hanson has researched the subject of alcohol and drinking for over 30 years, beginning with his Ph.D. dissertation investigation and has written widely on the subject.

Hanson is often a critical and countervailing voice against prevailing views on alcohol use and consumption. Hanson contends, for example, that that the benefits of moderate drinking outweigh the harms from abusive drinking. [link]. Hanson is a critic of many groups that advocate for the reduction of alcohol use, who he describes as “neo-prohibitionist.” Many of the groups criticized by Hanson do not advocate for an absolute ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages, as prohibitionists historically have, but rather advocate for laws that would place restraints on the sale and use of alcohol by drivers, minors and members of the public at large. These laws include so called “open container” laws, laws restricting driving under the influence of alcohol, and laws restricting the sale of alcohol and laws limiting advertising of alcoholic beverages.

Groups criticized by Hanson include:

Hanson criticizes the "temperance mentality" of many of these groups and claims that “their tactic is to establish cultural rather than strictly legal prohibition by making alcohol beverages less socially acceptable and marginalizing those who drink, no matter how moderately.” Hanson is a critic of the current 21 year old age limit on drinking in the United States.

He also criticizes the academic and author Dr. Henry Wechsler. See also [Dr. Wechsler's home page].

Hanson is a frequent contributor to Wikipedia under the nom de plume David Justin (see [Help desk/Archive 28] #133).
