Dawn Atwood

Dawn Atwood is a fictional character on the FOX television series The O.C., played by Daphne Ashbrook. She is the mother of Ryan Atwood and Trey Atwood.
Dawn is initially seen as an alcoholic and neglectful mother. She has a lot of trouble coping with Ryan and Trey, eventually abandoning Ryan after he and his brother stole a car. She was tracked down by Sandy Cohen, and returned to the Cohen household to try and repair her relationship with Ryan. However, after she got drunk and realised she was unable to cope and look after herself — let alone Ryan — she left Ryan with Sandy and Kirsten, knowing they would look after him better. She reappeared during the third season, where she had gotten herself in trouble with the law after making counterfeit cheques. Sandy visited her and got her out, and she was supposed to go to Ryan's birthday, though she felt unable to in the end. Ryan visited her later on to invite her to his graduation, and despite some initial reservations about a new boyfriend of hers, the visit went well and Dawn agreed. She went to his graduation at the end of the season, and gave him a car as a present.
