Maggot Debridement Therapy is the intentional introduction by a health care practitioner of live, disinfected maggots or fly larvae into the non-healing skin and soft tissue wound(s) of a human or other animal for the purpose of debridement. Medical Maggots™ represent the first living organism ever allowed by the modern Food and Drug Administration for production and marketing.
In oral hygiene, debridement refers to the removal of the dental tartar that has accumulated over teeth. Debridement in this case is done using hand tools and ultrasound instruments. The ultrasound dislodges the tartar which is then removed.
