Built in 1836, the Decatur-Courtland-Tuscumbia Railroad was the first railroad to be built west of the Appalachian Mountains in the United States.
The Decatur-Courtland-Tuscumbia Railroad runs from Decatur, AL in Morgan County through the northern half of Lawrence County through the town of Courtland, AL, then into Colbert County and ends in the city of Tuscumbia, AL.
The Decatur-Courtland-Tuscumbia Railroad is still in operated by the Norfolk Southern Railway and serves as a vital railroad link between The Shoals, and the City of Decatur. In 1850 it was incorporated into the Memphis and Charleston Railroad which eventually merged into the Southern Railway, predescessor of the Norfolk Southern.
