The December solstice occurs on December 21 or December 22 of most years, and is known by different names in different hemispheres of Earth:

• Winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere; the shortest day of the year in December.

In the Southern Hemisphere; the shortest day of the year in June.

• Summer solstice in the Southern Hemisphere; the longest day of the year in December.

In the Northern Hemisphere;the longest day of the year in June.
