Encyclopedia : D : DE : DEN : Dengaku

Dengaku (田楽) were rustic Japanese harvest celebrations. They consisted mostly of dances and were performed by villagers at the rice planting celebrations either at the new year or during the planting season in early summer. During the 14th century these dances were brought into the cities for use in theater, notably by the playwright and actor Kanami.
