Derry (Stephen King)
Encyclopedia : D : DE : DER : Derry (Stephen King)
Derry, Maine is part of Stephen King's fictional Maine topography, and, like Castle Rock, it has served as the setting for a number of his novels, novellas, and short stories. It first appeared in the short story, 'The Bird and the Album' (later included in the seminal King novel It). Insomnia expanded on Derry, and it also appears in Bag of Bones. Derry is said to be near Bangor, Maine, but King has acknowledged that Derry is actually his portrayal of Bangor.
In It, the defining Derry novel, it is revealed that the town has been haunted by a shapeshifting monster since it was created. This creature was responsible for the complete disappearance of the town's population during its early settlement and for literally hundreds of grisly murders ever since. Since the monster changes shape to match the fears of its victim, it has been suggested that the monster's true form is the town of Derry itself.
