In its only season, the Detroit Wheels an American football team not actually based in Detroit, but in Ypsilanti, Michigan some 37 miles from downtown Detroit that played in the World Football League. They only lasted one year, 1974, and it wasn't even a full season. After 14 games, in which they won once and lost 13 and played its home games at Eastern Michigan University's Rynearson Stadium, the WFL folded the financially plagued franchise.

The team was founded by 10 investors on December 13, 1973, which grew to a group of 32 or 33 members. Among the racially-mixed Detroit ownership were Motown singerMarvin Gaye and Motown records vice-president Esther Edwards. Another owner that many Detroit people will know is Mike Ilitch (owner of the Red Wings and Tigers).
