The Deutsches Museum is one of the world's largest museums of technology and science. It is based in Munich. There are about 1.3 million visitors each year.

The museum has two branches in and near Munich and one in Bonn. It was founded on June 28, 1903, at a meeting of the German Association of Engineers as an initiative of Oskar von Miller.

It was called: "German Society of the Museum for Masterpieces of Natural Science and Technology".

One branch of the Deutsches Museum was opended in 1995 in Bonn. It especially focuses on German technology, science and reseach after 1945.

Island

The small island in the middle of the river Isar was chosen as location for the museum. The island was used for rafting wood since middle age. Because of regular flooding by the river isar which had a high variation in water before the building of the Sylvensteinspeicher the river inhabited no buildings. 1772 the Isar baraks where built on the island and after the flooding of 1899 the building where rebuilt flood proven. The city council announced 1903 to give the island for the new built Deutsche Museum for free. The island formerly known as Kohleinsel (coal island) was then renamed to Museumsinsel (museum island).

Planning

After the failed World's Fair in Prussia 1879 the need for a exhibition for the industrial progress several attempts for collections of machines and industrial In Munich Karl Poellath opened 1895 a museum of working accident prefentation and hygiene. The museum was renamed to Königlich Bayrisches Arbeitermuseum 1906. In contrast to this a concept for a scientific education by the society of engineers and Oskar von Miller was anounced 1903.

Oskar von Miller

Son of Ferdinand von Miller, studied electro engineer and built the first high voltage line from Mießbach to Munich (57 km) in 1882 for the electronic exhibition in Munich. 1883 he joined AEG and founded an engineering office in Munich. The Frankfurter electricity exhibition 1891 and several power plants founded the legendary name of Oskar von Miller. The exhibition and the collection of the Deutsches Museum were strongly influenced personally by Oskar von Miller.

First Years

After planes from Gabriel von Seidel the foundation was laid in 1906. The construction was stopped by the First World War and the not finished buildings where opened for public 1925. During the built up the collection was stored in the Schwere Reiter Kaserne (barks for heavy cavalry) and the Bayrischen Nationalmusem (Bavarian national museum). In 1930 the tree main buildings have been finished. The buildings for the collections on the upstream part of the island. In the middle the 1932 opened bibliotheca and than the Congressional center know partly used by an IMAX theater. In the 1934 a member of the NSDAP became part of the board but most of the former members staid in office during that time. In 1944 80% of the collections and most of the building were deltoid by an air raid. The reconstruction started before the end of the war and the museum was reopened 7. Mai 1947. The pre war exhibition area was reached in 1969. In 1992 the Flugwerft Oberschleißheim (a former airport) became part as an aircraft museum. One branch of the Deutsches Museum was opened in 1995 in Bonn. It especially focuses on German technology, science and research after 1945. Since 2003, the Verkehrszentrum which documents the development in transportation. It is located on the old area of the Messegelände (exhibition center) in Munich
