Deva
A music director (music composer) in Tamil film industry aka Kollywood. Many know his gaana pattu (songs in which the lyrics have little or no substance, written mostly using Madras bashai). In recent years the sociological content and the philosophical outmooring in his songs are getting appreciation even from the otherwise conservative Tamil middle class.
Widely acknowledged as the 'Father of Gaana Genre' in Tamil moviedom, some of the songs of this genre (not necessarily Deva's) are reaching the dance festival and party circuit across states ("Manmadaraasa manmadaraasa..." & "Eppadi Podu Podu Kannale" are good examples).
He is also known for lifting snippets of music from famous English pop songs and using them as his own. ("Sayyoni" by Pakistani band Junoon was successfully incorporated in one of his movies). But there is always a Deva 'touch' whatever be the source. The roots of the ingenious guitar piece in the song "Kaadhala Kaadhala" in the Kamala Hasan's starer 'Avvai Shanmugi' remains untraced. There is a good possibility that it belongs to Deva.
