Devil (Tekken)
Encyclopedia : D : DE : DEV : Devil (Tekken)
Devil is a character/final boss in the Tekken fighting game series.
History
Before Tekken
After being thrown from a cliff by his father, Kazuya Mishima offered his soul to the devil in return for the power to overthrow his father, Heihachi Mishima. Initially, Kazuya's soul was not fully consumed by Devil (which led to an internal struggle against Angel, who represented Kazuya's good side), but during the timeframe of Tekken 4, Devil and Kazuya act as one. All other members of Mishima clan (except for Heihachi), possess the hereditary trait that allows the Devil to consume them in the first place: the Devil Gene. However, within the series, only the devil which inhabits Kazuya is referred to as just "Devil".Symbiotic relationship with Kazuya
Previously, Devil and Kazuya had an unclear association. While it was well established and generally accepted amongst Tekken fans that Kazuya sold his soul to Devil for exchange for power to live and obtain his revenge, it was not understood completely if Devil and Kazuya were one entity or two separate individuals. If anything, Devil looked exactly like Kazuya, only he had a complete change in appearance- in which Devil had a third eye on his forehead, two horns and wings.Tekken 4 however, brought the argument and debate to an end once and for all, when it was revealed that Devil and Kazuya were once separate entities before Kazuya, unknowingly managed to "unify the two powers into one". In Kazuya's Tekken 4 ending, both Kazuya and Heihachi approach Jin's body in Honmaru (Jin is held captive and is chanined up). Heihachi begins to notice an evil presence within Kazuya, and asks "Who are you?". Kazuya, whose eyes are now glaring red, states "I am what you refer to as "Devil". He then goes on to explain that during their final fight 20 years ago, he lost apart of himself when Heihachi attempted to kill him (his other half was stored within Jin). After much discussion, Devil knocks Heihachi out of the room with his telekinetic power and focuses his attention to Jin.
However, during the process of trying to gain his other half from Jin, he realises that the Kazama blood within Jin is somewhat strong enough to withstand the change completely. It is there where Devil falls to his knees and begins to struggle; with his body surrounded by electricity, Devil begins to scream:
"Kazuya!,...What are you doing?...This can't...be...possible!"
When Kazuya gains complete control of himself, he mutters "I see...I didn't know about this method of unifying our power...Now, this will be the end of you, as you...will become a part of me" in which he was referring to Devil. As a result, it is now known that Kazuya is in complete control of his devil form; which makes sense in Kazuya's Tekken 5 Story mode introduction, where Kazuya morphs into his devil form in order to escape Honmaru. As a result of the unification of Devil with Kazuya, Kazuya now controls his devil self, and that the two minds (if any) are both controled by Kazuya himself.
Trivia
- In Tekken, Devil did not have any wings.
- In Tekken 2, Devil did not have a tail, but he does have a tail in Tekken Tag Tournament.
- Choosing both Kazuya and Devil in Tekken Tag Tournament and then tagging either character into the match results in the morphing of the other, eg: Tagging in Devil while playing as Kazuya results in Kazuya morphing into Devil.
- Kazuya's Devil form is the only form that is referred to as "Devil". However, in Kazuya's Tekken 5 prologue and Namco x Capcom, he is referred to as "Devil Kazuya".
