Dickson is a city in Dickson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 12,244 at the 2000 census.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 42.8 km² (16.5 mi²). 42.7 km² (16.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (0.36%) is water.
Demographics
As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 12,244 people, 4,934 households, and 3,300 families residing in the city. The population density was 287.0/km² (743.4/mi²). There were 5,280 housing units at an average density of 123.8/km² (320.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 87.86% White, 8.83% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.56% Asian, 0.77% from other races, and 1.54% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.94% of the population.There were 4,934 households out of which 34.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.5% were married couples living together, 16.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.1% were non-families. 29.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city the population was spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 86.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $34,549, and the median income for a family was $42,632. Males had a median income of $32,733 versus $23,138 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,654. About 12.6% of families and 15.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.3% of those under age 18 and 14.2% of those age 65 or over.
