Digitonin

Digitonin is a glycoside obtained from Digitalis purpurea; the aglycone is digitogenin which is bound to five sugars. Digitonin solubilizes lipids. It is used as a tool in biochemistry for several purposes (like solubilizing membrane proteins) and as a reagent for precipitating cholesterol. It has no cardiac effects. Digitonin is also used for permeabilizing the membrane of isolated cells.
