Pandit Dinanath Mangeshkar (Marathi: दीनानाथ मंगेशकर) (1900 or 1901 – April 24, 1942) was the father of well-known singers Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, and Usha Mangeshkar as well as composers Hridayanath Mangeshkar and Meena Mangeshkar.
Life and career
Master Dinanath Mangeshkar was born in the small village of Mangeshi in Goa in 1900 or 1901. He was the eldest son of Ganeshbhatt Abisheki and his wife, Yesubai Rane. He started taking singing and music lessons from Shri Baba Mushelkar at the tender age of five and he also became a disciple at Gwalior school. He joined the Kirloskar Sangeet Mandali and the Kirloskar Natak Mandali when he was barely 11 years old. He won the hearts of theatre-loving people with his good looks and his flawless and melodious voice so much that the then giant of the Marathi stage, the great Bal Gandharva publicly declared that he would welcome the entry of Dinanath in his organization "by throwing a carpet of rupee coins under his feet". He became the owner of a theatrical company which made him pitch his tent in nearly every town such as Pune, Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara and Miraj. During the period of 1935, he produced 3 films in Marathi. Dinanath was not only well versed in Indian classical music but also in Sanskrit Astrology. He became famous for his exceptionally sonorous voice. Being his family surname first Hardikar, Dinanath was determined to take his first step in his professional life with a distinctive surname, which did not have the slightest shadow of his past. His ancestral village was called Mangeshi and the name of the family deity was Mangesh. So he adopted the surname Mangeshkar to signify he was the very hand of Lord Mangesh ('kar' is Sanskrit for hand).Death
On Friday, April 24 1942, Pandit Dinanath Mangeshkar died of heart disease after being ill for a few weeks. Dinanath had departed leaving behind a stricken 32 year old Shevanti and a young 13 year old Lata Mangeshkar. He had accurately predicted his oncoming death as well as several accurate predictions about his life. For on Wednesday, he told his family that after 11:20 on Friday, he would be no more.Marriages
First Marriage
Seth Haridas Ramdas Lad was the most prosperous businessman of the town of Thalner in Gujarat. Apart from his own mansion, which was guarded by two Pathans round the clock, he owned about sixty houses in town. His fair and beautiful daughter Narmada was to marry Dinanath and the ceremony took place as planned in 1922. Narmada was renamed 'Shrimati' by her in-laws. At the time she was barely 19 and her husband Dinanath 22. They had a daughter named Lata, who died in her infancy. Dinanath's wife also died around this time, (probably) after the death of their daughter.Dinanath's second wife was Shuddhamati (also called Shevanti); she was his first wife's sister. Their first child was named 'Hridaya' but in memory of his dead daughter, Dinanath called her 'Lata'. The name stuck and it is by that name that his legendary eldest daughter is known today.
Second Marriage
The marriage of Dinanath and Shevanti was solemnised at a quiet ceremony within the house. Shevanti's mother chose not to attend. The year was 1927. Shevanti was renamed 'Shuddhamati' in her new house. Though her mother-in-law also called her Shrimati and the name stuck. Shrimati was also called Mai. Shrimati would call her husband "Malak" (meaning Lord and master). Later, Shrimati gave birth to five children: Lata, Meena, Asha, Usha, and Hridaynath.
