Dissing
Encyclopedia : D : DI : DIS : Dissing
Dissing is a slang term derived from the word disrespect. The verb "to dis" originated in African American Vernacular English, though its use has become widespread among people of many racial and social backgrounds. One form of dissing is saying a yo mamma joke to someone. There is some contradiction on the spelling of the word. It is considered to be spelled diss and dissing but some consider dis and dising to be correct.
History
The first recorded use of diss was in a 1987 song "Shut Em Down" by Public Enemy that contained the quote, "A magazine or two is dissin' me and dissin' you." Claims that the word had origins as early as 1970 lack evidence of usage.
