Division of Corangamite

Encyclopedia : D : DI : DIV : Division of Corangamite

The Division of Corangamite is an Australian Electoral Division in Victoria. The division was created in 1900 and was one of the original 75 divisions contested at the first federal election. It is named for Lake Corangamite. It is located in the Western District of Victoria and has always included the regional centre of Colac, but today most of its voters live in the suburbs of Geelong or coastal communities such as Anglesea and Queenscliff. Until the 1930s it was a marginal seat which was occasionally won by the Australian Labor Party. In 1918 it was the first seat won by the newly formed Country Party. Since the 1940s, however, it has been a fairly safe seat for the Liberal Party.
