He is the creator of Rock, and several other robots in the series (including the first six Robot Master bosses of the game series). He is also presented as the creator of Mega Man X.
It is not completely apparent if the living Dr. Light of the original series and the Dr. Light hologram from the X-series are one and the same. Considering that the original SNES "Mega Man X" manual states that Dr. Cain is examining Dr. Light's original laboratory, it is extremely likely.
Dr. Light is depicted as an aged scientist (in his late 50s or early 60s) with a white fluffy beard and hair combed to the back of his head. He has made several appearances in the Mega Man games, often giving Mega Man new equipment to battle his enemies.
In the X-series, the Dr. Light hologram resides in capsules hidden within stages and gives X enhanced armor parts, which affect his abilities and appearance.
History
Classic and X series
Dr. Light graduated from Robert University's engineering department, where he met colleague Dr. Albert Wily. He currently (as of 20XX) resides in the midwestern United States with his robotic son, Rock, and his robotic daughter, Roll. It is unknown currently what the state of Dr. Light is. He was presumed dead (due to his age and the fact that he is now a hologram) but in Mega Man X5 and Mega Man X6, Zero actually appears to hold a conversation with this hologram, showing that Dr. Light's essence or being may reside in the machines or that he is living somewhere out of danger. Building sentient holograms is yet another possibility. Zero discusses with the hologram at one point in the game, some vision of an old professor (presumebly Dr. Wily) in his head. He fails to describe him well enough so that Dr. Light did not know who it was, passing it off as a mere "error." However, judging from his slight pause, perhaps Dr. Light does indeed recognize who it is, but doesn't want to tell Zero for fear of him discovering his MaVeRiCk self. One ought note that during the events of Mega Man X through Mega Man X3, Dr. Light's capsules are all recordings, with Dr. Light presumably having recorded these messages and leaving them in the capsules, with phrases such as "I do not know what has happened to you" and other quotes indicating a recording. However, in the era covering Mega Man X4 through Mega Man X6, the capsules are inhabited by said sentient hologram or relay. While most likely an error of continuity on Capcom's part, the capsules' messages again are presented as recordings in Mega Man X7, and back to being sentient in Mega Man X8.MegaMan Battle Network
In the MegaMan Battle Network series, Dr. Light's counterpart is known as Tadashi Hikari and is the father of Yuuichiro Hikari and the grandfather of Lan Hikari (Netto Hikari) and Hub Hikari (Saito Hikari) - aka MegaMan.EXE. In his youth, Tadashi Hikari developed the internet that exists in the series, that allows Net Navis to exist in the Cyber World - including the prototype, Alpha, which gained the ability to act on its own and turned on its creators, leading to its sealing.
Tadashi himself has never appeared while alive in the series, beyond being mentioned and in scenes where Lan and MegaMan find ways of "visiting the past." This first occurred in "Battle Network 3", where they discovered a memory recording of Dr. Hikari inside Alpha. He would be seen again in "Battle Network 5", in "Vision Burst" scenarios, recordings of specific events in time, all of which were used to give Lan and MegaMan particular information about the past and reveal the secrets of a project Tadashi was involved in.
In the anime, Tadashi is rarely mentioned, although his most meaningful appearance is a reminiscence of how he developed the "Ultimate NetNavi", PharohMan. He is present as a speaking character during a flashback sequence about Bass in the manga, however. He has also made an appearance and mention in Rockman Beast though this was his paralell universe self. But this paralell version had helped in taking all emotions from Beyondard Colonel and created Iris to hold them until Colonel wanted them back. There is no other known mention of him besides the current.
Personality
Light seems to care deeply about Mega Man, and it is his disdain for violence that was transferred to Mega Man, thusly making them share similar views on the subject. Light looks out for Mega Man as a father would look out for a son. In a way, Mega Man is his son.Name trivia
In Japan the character's name is pronounced "Dr. Right" by those who do not have a firm grasp on the "L" sound.
This caused some confusion in early translations: originally, in America, the character was renamed "Wright" because Capcom of America thought that the Japanese had tried to imitate American names unsuccessfully (this is also why Wily is often confused as "Wiley"). Dr. Light has been called by his Japanese name only once in the English-version releases, in Mega Man 3 (NES, 1990).
Further complicating matters, in the Mega Man Battle Network alternate universe series, Dr. Light's character counterpart is named "Tadashi Hikari" (光 正 Hikari Tadashi). Hikari (光) means "light", but Tadashii (正しい) means "right" or "correct". This was done deliberately to poke fun at the mistranslations of the past.
American fanon attributes the middle name "Xavier" to Dr. Light, but this name is not found in any Japanese or American official sources.
