Doctor of Letters

Encyclopedia : D : DO : DOC : Doctor of Letters

A Doctor of Letters (Latin: Litterarum doctor; D.Litt.; or Litt.D.) is a university academic degree.

In the United Kingdom, the degree is a higher doctorate, above the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D), and is issued by a committee on the basis of a long record of research and publication.

Contemporary usage

In the United States, the degree is almost always an honorary degree often conferred to those who have contributed to the humanities. Drew University has recently begun offering the D.Litt to persons who have successfully completed coursework and a dissertation on an interdisciplinary topic. It differs from traditional Ph.D. programs in that there are no preset language requirements or comprehensive examinations.
